The Cogs Agency Career Surgery, in conjunction with , is in its third successful year; providing advice and support to students stepping onto the creative career ladder.

Cogs Agency ran a two-day session this year for a group of select graduates, and we decided to try a different format which included a Group Seminar with Cogs’ Directors and a one-on-one chat with a senior member of the Cogs team.Β  We covered a lot of topics, including:

  1. What are advertising and design agencies really looking for in grads?
  2. Where are the career opportunities in the industry right now?
  3. What kind of companies need design skills?

The two group sessions included 8-10 students and Cogs Agency Directors Liam, Chris and Harry, who provided insight into the working environment. They discussed what it’s like to work inside agencies, within brands, and lastly the opportunities available for freelancers.

The topics in the one-on-one coaching sessions also covered a broad variety of ideas, but several themes emerged, including how to write a good CV & covering letter; how to present online portfolios; how to find & apply for desired roles; and how to effectively use social media (e.g. LinkedIn and Twitter) to search for job opportunities.

You can find the invaluable advice from both days on our Facebook page, along with photos from the Career Surgery. In addition, we’ll be running a week of online advice for graduates next week via our blog, Facebook, Β and LinkedIn accounts.Β  Stay tuned and follow us to receive the information.
