Innovation isn’t just all about ideas or invention. There are plenty of ways to innovate and one of them is through Design Thinking.

On 22 Jan 2020, Cogs Hong Kong and strategic design consultancy, MAKE Studios brought an Introduction to Design Thinking through local digital community HK Techneeks at Garage Society in Wan Chai.

We had an amazing turn out that packed the venue (more than a 100) even though it was the festive weekend. Thank you for your support and Happy Lunar New Year to everyone!

Design Thinking in Hong Kong

The interest in this problem-solving process is gaining popularity among businesses across the board, not just creative companies. This is partly due to the fact that Design Thinking is a cost-efficient and agile way to innovate.

All these are evident as Hong Kong plays hosts to industry conferences, meetups (like Design Thinking Meetup), workshops, design jams, social innovation programs with the support of the government.

Our presenters for the evening were Ada Sin and Mark Swinkels who both work at MAKE Studios, the design consultancy that focuses on strategic design, service design and capability building for clients looking to innovate. The businesses that were on the receiving end of MAKE’s guidance range from global financial institutions, NGOs, universities, tourism boards, startups etc.

The MAKE Studios team demonstrated their knowledge and experience to the large audience under an hour, clearing misconceptions about Design Thinking, showcasing its application and how to introduce it in your business any day.

A Collaborative and Holistic Process

To ensure participants get an idea, the duo got everyone in the audience through an interactive activity called “Yes, and & Yes, but”.

It shows two different kinds of mindsets one can have during the design process to either diverge (yes, and) or converge (yes, but). In doing this activity, people are able to experience both mindsets.

Ada and Mark also encouraged the audience to explore and connect with design thinking professionals in the Hong Kong scene by participating in design jams. Jams are events where you can apply your knowledge and create something. Read more about Design or Service Jams here ⯈

At the end of the session, attendees were asked to leave their honest feedback anonymously on the back of the room.

We hoped that everyone has a great time and if you missed this session, there is a repeat on the 15th April hosted by the Design Thinking Meetup.

*Update 4 Feb 2020: The initial 5th Feb Meetup by Design Thinking Hon Kong is postponed to 15th April. Please visit their meetup for more details.
