Berlin’s digital infrastructure has matured and its start-up culture continues to flourish – which makes it a city in demand for the digitally savvy, but what does this mean for digital salaries?

The demand for Digital Creatives continues to grow as well as the demand for User Experience. Agencies in Germany now fully understand the need to make significant transitions and digital transformations to be innovative and ahead of the trends. Candidates who have a good understanding of UX, UI and service design are enjoying more job opportunities and higher salaries in increasingly digitalised environments. Agencies that know and understand the need for these user-centered methodologies are providing amazing opportunities for UX talent, with well-paid salaries.
The trend that management consultancies are acquiring digital agencies, continues into 2017. Besides this, many clients are opening their own digital-labs, building up their own in-house design teams and the world of ‘start-ups’ is continuously booming. This means Berlin has a huge demand for Senior UX-talent in the market. The skill-sets are becoming more specified: we see a separation into Strategic Designer (Analytics, UX-Strategy, Service Design) and Experience Designer (UX-Design, Prototyping). People with a hybrid or even trybrid skillset (Design/Code/Concept) are more difficult to find, therefore highly in demand.
Similar patterns are emerging within Marketing and Clients Services. Many German social media agencies are positioning themselves as digital transformation agencies to ensure they remain at the forefront of the digital trends. Content Communication continues to be a significant focus for the agencies, as well as Content Marketing, Personal Marketing, Cross Marketing and Collaborative Marketing. As such, there is increasing collaboration and overlap between publishing and digital agencies. This is great for content marketeers, who are finding themselves in more demand than ever. Candidates who can understand all forms of content are now desirable, and the more versatile the background, the better.
In Berlin particularly, the supply and demand for tech talent is another area that is very pronounced at the moment, (some estimations claim there are between eight and ten potential job offers for just one programmer), which in turn naturally leads to competitive salaries. However leading agencies and businesses are still able to be as selective as ever offering great packages to those with the right skill-set and cultural fit. Technology is also naturally transitioning into a multi-faceted discipline, as with design and client services. It is not unheard of to have a request for a developer with creative flair or one who understands UX and animation – so multiskilled tech talent is extremely sought after.
On top of this, Berlin is witnessing an increasing need for digital transformation and innovation managers. Candidates well versed in new and upcoming business models for industry 4.0 are much sought after. Buzzwords like design thinking, smart technologies, SaaS and product innovation are becoming increasingly important not only for designers and developers but for account and strategy leads as well.
Another trend Berlin has seen develop in recent months is an increase of UK agencies looking to open up in the German ‘silicon alley’ , to build a base from where to conquer the EU main land. So business developers with a solid understanding of the local market are in high demand. Could this be an after effect of Brexit?
What started slowly in 2015/2016 is now a full trend for agencies as well as brands: Berlin is seeing analyst teams being built as an internal task force to gain more digital insights and big data from clients, markets and last but definitely not least users, customers, target groups and their respective journeys in the world wide web.
