The 2017 Digital Salary Benchmark for London

Insights into the London digital market for 2017 and a full digital salary benchmark…

Last year saw some unprecedented events for London and there were some clear ripple effects into all industries, including digital.  While some businesses have struggled to stay ahead, many others continue to push boundaries and innovate.

Competition is rife, it has never been more important for businesses to be adaptable and with the proliferation of new technology if businesses are not working at a fast pace they will struggle to survive. The year ahead looks set to bring about many changes within organisations and specifically with regards to the talent they require.

The Tech scene in 2016 saw a lift, with an increase in tech starts up across the capital and a surge in businesses undergoing their digital transformation. So far in 2017, Cogs have seen an increase on permanent technology salaries whereas the previous years, this has not been so visible.  Expectations for Senior developers are extremely high, companies are demanding a combination of broad stack knowledge, commercial experience, exceptional people skills and even managerial experience. This has meant that the top end salaries for the Senior Developers have seen the biggest rise. Technical Director level salaries have also increased, for similar reasons, expectations are high for those who can govern the technical aspects of implementation projects and lead development teams.

User Experience (UX) remains a sought after area of digital. As we continue into 2017 Cogs are experiencing more permanent opportunities now, given the market has shifted towards proper product development and large-scale service design projects, on top of the usual roles we get in, bringing in a wider pool of permanent candidates. Agencies are also requiring more permanent UXers as they are embarking on bigger and longer term product and service design projects. We are getting strong feedback from our network that these roles are quickly becoming the most desirable amongst the permanent community. We’ve also witnessed an increase in product-focussed roles, both agency and brand side, which tend to offer more competitive salaries in the industry. Freelance roles are still coming in thick and fast across the industry offering both short term and longer term opportunities.

Design and Creative salaries have not altered very much between 2016 and 2017. As always, there is more investment in permanent senior talent simply due to the diverse requirements for the roles, agencies and in-house departments want to seek well-rounded professionals with a hybrid skill set – especially across mobile and responsive design. The trend that middleweight talent is genuinely hired on a freelance basis continues, but rates have not fluctuated over the past 12 months because the market is saturated with good mid-level talent, hence agencies are only willing to part with more money for more senior, permanent staff.

Within Client Services and Project Management a similar trend has rolled out into 2017, there is a developing need for integrated skill sets rather than specialists. For example, there is less of a demand for print project managers, now clients require a print PM who also has experience in digital, social and technology. Interestingly, even service design and UX requirements have drifted into project management over the past 12 months, with clients being more aware of the importance of user journeys, PMs are expected to have a broad understanding of these elements. With regards to salaries, there has been very little change as agencies and clients are being continually cautious with budgets and expenditure. There is also a clear trend emerging that favours permanent over freelance employees, as agencies are looking for the stability and commitment that permanent staff can bring.

Last year social media took heed of the consumers need for “on demand” and introduced many LIVE features (facebook live, Instagram stories etc). Recent studies show social media still has a lot to offer and is as influential as ever and while social and community salaries have not increased in recent months, there is definitely still room for growth.

Data and Analytics is a booming market with more companies investing more money in Customer Analytics, Business Intelligence and Data Science than ever before. The need to understand customer spending habits and being able to predict market trends through large volumes of loyalty, customer and financial data is extremely lucrative. With strong salaries and quick career progression Analytics is becoming the go-to career for some of the UK’s hottest Mathematics and Science graduates.

As with Data and Analytics, another area enjoying the “boom” in London is Cyber Security– so much so, that earlier this year a new cybersecurity centre overseen by intelligence agency GCHQ has opened in London with the aim of addressing cyber security skills gap in the UK.  There is a clear disparity in salaries across the sector due to the skill shortage that the country is experiencing. To this end, you can find up to £10-15k salary differences from company to company dependent on how strong the need is and the financial power that companies are willing to exert to attract the best talent.

Also, due to the speed at which the sector has grown, you find that job titles do not necessarily represent the line management experience but more the candidates remit in terms of the size of network and chance of attack. For instance, a CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) can be paid £90k, while another is earning the equivalent of £160k. That being said, a disparity of this size only happens at this level. Most other roles such as Security Architect or Consultant have a £10-20k range. Clients are looking to Cogs to benchmark salaries as we have such a wide network. Our candidates use us to work out what their true market worth is.

Businesses and agencies across London now fully understand the need to make significant transitions and digital transformations to be innovative and stay ahead of the trends and this means there is a growing need for hybrid digital talent to transform and grow businesses in 2017 (and onwards), so now is the time to take those opportunities and make your mark on the London digital scene.

Remember, any salary listed on a job spec or on our benchmark is negotiable. There are a number of variables to take into account from skillset to type and size of company, number of years service, but also on time spent working in London and on regional projects.
