As part of our weekly Tuesday feature on new technology, we asked Philip Bulley, a former Cogs freelancer and one of the founders of social gaming start-up 2Fold20 Play, to tell us about his journey from freelance technologist to company owner.
“I’d had a dream of starting up my own digital entertainment company for a few years, and in 2010 I started making moves toward this. The first step was moving on from my permanent role at a digital ad agency and instead took on freelance contracts. After hiring a fair few freelancers whilst in my perm role, Cogs Agency stood out by consistently supplying great talent, and whom also spoke of their recruitment consultants very highly – it made sense to become a part of this. The attractions of the freelance world included increased independence over my work schedule, allowing me the time to maintain focus on longer-term ambitions; gaining experience of running a limited company on the smallest scale and boosting my portfolio. Looking back, I can say that my year of freelancing mainly at production house Stinkdigital represents one of the most enjoyable parts of my career so far. By late 2011, I’d teamed up with long-time friend Neill Watson and successfully raised initial seed capital to launch a social gaming company. We’ve now launched our first game Enjoy! Karaoke and now two months into its public release we’ve managed to reach 30,000 MAU (Monthly Active Users) on a limited marketing budget. We’ve also been featured in a television review on BBC News:
Our goal with Enjoy! Karaoke is to create the ultimate singing social gaming experience. So far, so good!”
Here at Cogs, we’re absolutely loving Enjoy! Karaoke, particularly our own Leanne Johnson, who has sung Britney Spears’ ‘Oh Baby baby’ to test out the app you can see her performance here:
If you’re brave enough, you can record your own performance within the app; and you may even get ranked within the top five which will secure your place on the Enjoy! Karaoke blog.
Or, you could be this guy (we love him)……
We managed to catch up with the Enjoy! Karaoke team at a Digital Shoreditch event yesterday.
