As a recruiter supporting global companies and international brands, I (Yukino 👋🏻) meet with over 30 bilingual professionals every month. One of the most common concerns I hear in our conversations is that you’re feeling underqualified in your job search.
That feeling is incredibly natural, and one that everyone encounters at some point in their career journey. But sometimes, it can stop you from pursuing opportunities where you’d truly shine.
Let me walk you through a real example that highlights why feeling underqualified in your job search isn’t always a reason to hold back.
When Feeling Underqualified Doesn’t Reflect Reality
I introduced a junior-level role at a global company to two candidates. The requirement? 3+ years of work experience.
-
Candidate A had 1.5 years of experience
-
Candidate B had 5 years
On paper, Candidate B looked like the obvious fit. But the offer went to Candidate A.
Why? Because while Candidate B had deep experience, they were ultimately seen as overqualified. The company was in a rebuilding phase and needed someone who could grow with the business, adapt to evolving systems, and embrace a bit of chaos. They worried Candidate B might feel frustrated in that kind of environment.
Meanwhile, Candidate A may not have hit the “3-year” mark, but they had gained rich, practical skills and showed a genuine excitement for the role. Their potential and attitude made all the difference.
Feeling underqualified in your job search? It’s Not Just About Years on a Resume
If you ever find yourself feeling underqualified in your job search, here’s my advice:
Look beyond the job spec. Instead, reflect on:
-
The quality and diversity of your experience
-
The mindset and energy you’d bring to the role
-
How well your motivation aligns with the company’s current needs
Years of experience aren’t everything. What truly matters is how you can contribute, grow, and fit into the company’s journey.
So if you’re hesitating to apply or feeling unsure—don’t disqualify yourself too early. And if you want someone to talk it through with, I’m here.
As your recruiter and career partner, I’d love to help you see past the doubt and into the possibilities ahead.
